The air is biting and nipping at my toasty fingers that are snug in my gloves. Everywhere around me the sky is dropping little white bombs that explode into less than color that cover everything the eye can see. Cars hope and pray they don't spin out on the fragile and delicate but very slippery and mystical black ice. The sound of children being pelted by each other to claim victory on another's fort that were supposed to keep them safe from fire if their opponents but fail very quickly. The cold is a frozen blanket that forms over the field.

As I open the front door it squeaks just like when I step on the sticky snow. The slick ice waits for me. I quickly run inside for shelter. I put my war gear on and try and venture out again. The knob of the door is bitterly cold. I take a step out onto the patio and the snow sucks me in. I hope and wish that the ice doesn’t grab at me and make me slip. I wait patiently on the steps until I feel it’s ready to go into the battle field. I jump into the car and feel the heated seat under me and the hot wind coming from the vent and I’m pleased.-Hadleigh Bigelow

The fresh, crisp snow coats all that us underneath it, giving it a sparkly, exuberant look. All the children with joyful smiles and red noses run around outside, indulging in the delicate, frosty powder. The icy air embraces them like a blanket. Its the time of year where the weather is weary, but spirits are high and merry, especially when Mother Nature decides to give a dusting of snow.

Ohh the cold weather, how it can bring joy and happiness or darkness and despair! I love when the cold weather brings snow to the joyful town of lunenburg, when it is just cold enough for the snow to fall but not too cold so you can’t go outside and the snow falls and it feels as if the snow is just giving you a little tap on the shoulder as if to say hello. Then you have the times when it is almost too cold to even go outside but you have to push on anyway, when the cold weather blows a harsh ice filled wind directly at your face it feels like the wind is repeating a swift punch directly to your face over and over again! It blows so hard that it as if you are being ripped apart sometimes it is hitting you so hard and so fast and it just keeps on happening without end! Although even with those ice filled storms and the power outs and all the depressing stuff that comes with the cold weather of the New England Winter, it will finish the storm shall sleep until another day and we will be able to carry out our normal deeds.

The frigid wind whistles in my ears. My nose turns from a shade of light pink, to a deep red. Snowflakes fall from the sky and float onto me, where they nestle into my jacket. It envelopes the ground, roofs, cars, street lights, and mailboxes in a blanket of pure white. The negative temperatures make it so cold, that I swear I see snowman shivering. Plow trucks lazily pass by. Windows are illuminated with soft, yellow light. Chimneys burst with smoke from the warm, glowing fires within neighborhood homes. Kids laugh while sledding down gradual hills. Inside, kids cuddle up by the fire with thick, fleece blankets. They sit at the counter and blow on steaming cups of hot chocolate, piled high with whip cream, and filled to the brim with marshmallows. It’s winter, a time of cold weather and good times.

It was a chilly, shivering day in northern Massachusetts. The temperature was basically below- below freezing. I stood toward the door, and he was warning me of the chill of the wind with the bells and chimes dangling and swinging in the Arctic-like air. I had put my knitted piece of clothing around my brick colored ears. I put the steel toes on my feet, who were begging for a hot bubble bath, took the jacket from the coat hanger and slowly but surely put my arm into each sleeve. I stood toward the door. Before I took my first step outdoors, I looked out the kitchen window. The tress were shaking their heads, begging me to stay indoors. But it was cold inside, too! "No, Sam! Stay inside and get away from the dreadful cold and wind!", they whispered to me in the most sad, depressing voices. Even with all of these signals, I had ignored the warnings, and stepped outside. The trees shouted with rage with my decision. But oh, this was my kind of weather. Even if this was single digit and negative temperatures, I was prepared for this awesome day.

The frigid air conceals me the moment I step foot outside. I’m suddenly drifting away from the warm fireplace, away from the fuzzy socks, away from the steaming hot cocoa, until I’m a part of the falling snow. I’ve been consumed in the icy arms that stand all around me, inviting me to make the very first imprints in the delicate, white blanket that has taken over the town. The secluded sun strains to break free of the stubborn clouds fierce grasp, while the wind fights against the trees mighty roots. The icicles hang from the old roof plates, longer and pointier than I’ve ever seen them before. Most of the the cars drive by slower than usual, however, they still turn the newly-fallen fluffy snow into brown, unwanted slush. But after a few minutes of the cool, iciness, I’m ready to let go. I pull of my coat and boots, step inside the balmy yellow house, and grab the blue flannel blanket that waited ever so patiently for me to return. This is winter, and to make it through, you just have to embrace it.

Frigid icy morning as I walk out the front steps. Next to me is a frozen plant that normally blooms with bright colors in the spring, on the other side are icicles hanging from the roof which is covered with dirty snow. The wind howled with great loud noise but the snow fell so calmly, it sprinkled down on the mushy grass that had just a thin layer of snow. It was almost like the snow wanted to suck me in it’s black dungeon. As I approached the steps I could just barely see the shiny black ice just sitting there waiting for it’s next victim to step on him and slip. I just stayed on the top of the steps looking out to the beautiful trees that sway in the wind and the snow that blows in my hair. I took one last look outside and took one step in my happy place, home.

The Ice Storm

The ice rained down like arrows in a medieval war, but not more than a second later the power went black. It just died. The power just died as we sat there hoping that a light switch would jump from off to on. The board games and flashlights cheered as we were forced to break them out of their little hidey hole. That was what it was like without technology for two whole days. That was until the lights managed enough power to finally get themselves working as the were before this horrible incident happened and finally our nightmare came to an end.

It’s the time of year where the weather is bleak, but spirits are high and merry, especially when Mother Nature decides to give a dusting of snow. However, indoors, where individuals decide to take shelter in their homes instead of indulging in the cold weather with the scenery of the falling powder out their windows. Either way, all is as it should be.

The cold walked down the street covering where it walked with a icy blanket. As it walked the slight drizzle turned to snow flakes putting a layer of soft fluffy snow on top of the icy ground.
As he walked down the streets he saw the school kids shivering as they waited for the bus that seemed to take longer than usual. The lakes that you used to swim in are now ice rinks inches thick. Parents trying to get to work struggling to get through the snow causing crashes and jams.
Others stay in their homes sheltering from the cold that patrols the streets like a guard at Buckingham Palace. Some schools canceled so the kids got on their snow stuff and headed out to play and others got on their skis and snowboards to hit the slopes and glide on the top of the snow like a plane through the air. Others wait in anticipation for the cold to walk down their street.

Falling asleep right in front of it. Come in my kitchen seeing my sister having mint ice cream. I feel chills coming up my back from just looking at it. Feels like her mouth is like Antarctica. Before I know it i go outside to shovel and snow blew up my back. I was so cold but i half to deal with the cold like a man. I fought through it like Rocky i come in such a brave man but then I was warm I was so happy and then wind blew on me because I didn't shut the door and then was cold.

Winter

We hiked up the treacherous hill with every last bit of energy we had. Any simple movement was a grueling task. The snow was up to my waist and I could hardly walk. On top of that, I had this heavy ol snow tube that was frozen solid from the previous night's blizzard. What was only maybe 100 feet, took us almost 5 minutes to get up. But it was all worth it when you got to the top of the hill and could look down on all crap you just trekked through. I felt a warm smile fight on to face through the bitter cold. I aimed at the jump and placed the block of ice on the snow. I bent over and placed my rear end in the center of the tube, gripped the handles and picked up my feet. The second they lifted up off the ground, I shot down the hill like a rock floats in water. I was speeding out of control and my flimsy noodle legs were completely helpless against the deep snow. As I neared the jump I thought about bailing but I wasn’t hiking back up any more than I had to. AHHHHHHHHH, I hit the lip of the jump and flew like a bird in mid air. Those few seconds seemed like time had completely stopped. I thought to myself, “this isn’t gonna turn out to well for me or the tube”. Someone suddenly hit the play button and I plummeted down to the cold, wet, and miserable Earth. My left leg hit the ground sideways and bent in an awkward position. I heard a sudden snap and instantly felt excruciating pain jolting through my whole body. I lay there in agony hoping someone heard my cries.

It was a nor'easter night in Lunenburg.
Brrrrr Brrrrr Brrrrr! It is freezing outside. There is 60 mile per hour winds and the trees are dancing like people in ballet! When I walked out of my garage I knew I was in a winter wonderland. The snow was so fluffy and it was like i was raining sheep fur. I ran over to my snowmobile and fired it up. Once it was ready, it was time to ride. My dad and I drove all over Lunenburg. We saw some cool animals like moose, deer, snowy owls and lots more. But then we came across this big trail that went up a huge hill. So my dad and I decided to go up the hill. My dad and I saw this jump in the trail. So he decides to go off of it and I decide to do it to. It was his turn, he went off the jump, and he sticks the landing. Now it’s my turn and I go off. I’m really high up in the air and then. Crashhhh! I fall off and my snowmobile tips over and I’m under it. My dad comes over and lifts it off of me. When I got up the hood was bashed in like a car that gets hit head on. Good thing my dad had a wench on his snowmobile because if he didn't my snowmobile would have stayed where it is.
We got home and my mom saw my snowmobile from the window. She comes running out and says, “Ryan are you okay?” I told her I was fine. I took a look back at my hood and it made me mad that I ruined my snowmobile.
Looks like I won’t be using that for along time. -Ryan Miller

As I wake from staying up all night saturday It had become aware to me that the plow trucks are making a boom, a crash, a buzz , and a cling as well as a little bit of chatter as if there were a car accident. The snow is usually bitter or raw as if you were in a freezer. It seems as if no one know's what had gone on but there was a some big storm last night also was a car accident the ground was very glinting as if it was shind with glider.

As I feel the piercing cold wind smacking my face, hear the snow crunching below my feet, and smell the hot chocolate in my house, I know it's cold out! Lakes, rivers and oceans all frozen up. Short sleeved shirts and shorts become extinct. Hats, gloves, and winter jackets dress people now that it is below 0 degrees. Windows are now all closed and the heater is turned on after its long nap over the summer. The trees stand there without their leaves freezing cold, the grass is replaced, by the several inches of snow and snowball fights turn into wars.

My fingers freeze as the cold air touches them while I dread forgetting my mittens at home. I look around and see the children sledding and skating on the lake. Everywhere little white flakes cover up the color of the world as far as the eye can see. The cars on the road pray to not spin out of control as the sound of children building snow forts flies through the air. My coat keeps me warm until I get home and the second I walk through the door I have my snow stuff on and I'm ready to enjoy the cold winter weather. -Hailey Lombardo

The frigid winter wind threatens to send me back into warmth and safeness of indoors. The winding path ahead is clear, from years of use. Ice skates in hand, the path looks welcoming, but this might just be one of winter’s tricks. The winds plays tricks, the snow plays tricks, the ice plays tricks. Crunching along the path narrows and widens like a game board. Snowflakes start floating down from the sky. Silent and unique. I walk into the tranquil clearing and a lake spreads out before me. The peaceful silence of winter surrounds me. Sitting down I pull on my skates. The lake is cleared, a clean slate. Skating out across the pond nothing seems impossible. The clearing is it’s own little world. Tucked away from the rest of society on a cold winter morning. The snow covers everything like powdered sugar on a lemon bar. The sun smiles down on the clearing making everything glisten. Icicles hang from trees threatening to drop if disturbed and the bushes stay hidden behind the snow not wanting to be seen.

Frigid air hugged me as I walked outside this morning. Blizzards knocked me over as I tried to walked to the car desperately, trying to warm up from this polar winter morning. Frostbite pierced my skin when I walked outside to be welcomed to arctic snow crawling up my naked ankles. My face instantly turned as red as Rudolph’s nose glimmering as bright as the sun. Gloves don’t protect my numbed fingers. My feet stopped but my body began to glide slowly and the weight on my legs felt at ease. Until I reached a slope and fell straight on my face. I sat there shivering, in pain as the snow sat on my frozen body. I thought I landed on the cold concrete, but I stood up and saw that the black-ice looked up at me and laughed. After an arctic day, I got home, sat down by the fire, and sipped some hot chocolate, I thought to myself, winter is a good time to stay indoors.

I put on my snow gear as my sister and I make plans to build snow forts. We ran outside and slid down the icy hill till we reached the bottom. I could hear the wind whistling in my ear like a staticy radio. We both picked our sides and began to build. “Ready. Set. Go!” she yelled and we started throwing snowballs non-stop until we ran out. An hour later we decided to have a race to see who could get up the icy hill and to the house first, I won. We finally went inside looking like snowmen and drank hot chocolate until we could feel our fingertips again.

I wrap myself in my insulated coat, put on my cozy hat, and brace myself for the monster that is wreaking havoc on the outside world and all it’s inhabitants. Once I feel that there is a minuscule chance that the bitter weather will be kind to me, I open the front door of my house. The adventure has begun. As the door squeaks open I am bombarded by frigid, frosty air. Even with my valiant effort of putting on a coat, it seems as though I am still freezing. The air is controlling the temperature, reaching for the thermostat and turning it down thirty-two degrees. All of this extreme cold was just insufferable. I needed to charge through and get to my destination, but that was a pretty daunting task as the air was riding a zamboni, turing my driveway into the TD Garden. I slipped and slid my way across the driveway that seemed to be going on for miles and miles without a distinct end. Finally, after extensive work, I had reached the car. Swifter than a cat I opened the door and jumped in, when a realization hit me like a six foot two, two hundred fifty pound linebacker. I had not warmed up the car.

I decided it was best to stay inside for the rest of the day. Even with a heavy winter jacket, a wind breaker, two sweatshirts, two hats, two pairs of gloves, and heavy boots it was too cold for me. Even just 10 minutes outside with all of that on was enough for me to stay inside. Jack Frost was more than just nipping at my nose, he painted it blue and grabbed it. The snow crept higher and higher, faster than I can handle. Then all of sudden it hit me. We're getting a Nor' Easter. Nor' Easter's are the worst storms in the northeastern part of the U.S. They are not fun, during or after. You have to spend half of your day shoveling snow and another half trying stay warm. In case your not from around here, you now understand how bad our weather can be.

The white glimmering powder on the ground is a beautiful sight to see in the winter. I can hear the wind howling in my ear and the cold nipping on my nose. I kept walking up the treacherous hill with my blue and red sled as I watch my sister zoom like a race car down the steep hill, she almost hit the playground. Finally I get on top of the hill and the wind has picked up a bit. I couldn't feel my face so it had to look like a bright red cherry. I placed the sled on the glimmering snow I get a running start and leap on to my sled, into the air I go. I zoom passed my sister and then I felt a snowball go down the back of my coat it was freezing. All of a sudden the playground came closer and closer the only thing I could do was jump so I jumped off the sled and got a mouthful of frigid snow on my face.

The cold, icy wind bites my face when I open the door. As I take my first step out the door I feel the white packed snow crunch beneath my feet. The tiny snowflakes land on my tongue and slowly start to melt. The snow gets deeper and deeper as I make my way to the top of the hill. I gather snow and shape it into a ball, I start to roll the snow all around the yard until it is the perfect shape for the body. I do the same with the neck and the head. The base is finally done I then added a carrot nose, sticks for arms and buttons for the eyes and smile. I give him a scarf and a top hat, he is finished. As I was building this snowman my gloves were like the warm summer sun keeping my hands warm in this cold weather. After I go inside I look out the window and see my beautiful creation I feel all warm and cozy inside on this ice cold winter day.

The sympathetic wave of cold white snow hit my face when i walked out onto my front porch. The coolness of space drifted into the sweatshirt of my house and it let a big smoke puff out it’s head. As soon as the first boot touched the snow, it made a crunch like bread, it at the same time froze my foot into it as if it had magnificent large arms that a body builder would have. Then the wind started to flurry all around me brutally, then it seemed to make me numb as if i stopped my blood supply and started a snow supply instead.

On the count of three, one, two..., three go! I pounce onto the sled feeling the artic snow flurry across my temple and side of my face as we plummet down the slope. My whole body gets chills with goosebumps following. As we approach the gargantuan jump I clasp my eyes and feel myself elevated into the air. I can sense the sled hitting bottom again and son after continuing our journey down the hill. My back lurches backward and we our back on our way to the bottom. The sled and snow are now in taction and we are now carving a trail through the little snowflakes that lie beneath us. As I reach the bottom I pull my foot out to slow us down until suddenly I'm spiraling out of control turning us backwards. I look back and see the hot chocolate stand approaching us.

The bitter cold air hit me when I tugged open the front door. As I stepped outside, my nose turned from a light pink to a dark red color, within 30 seconds. The wind rattled the trees and made my teeth chatter. Everything I looked at was white, as if they were painted. Roofs, cars, bushes, trees, and mailboxes all covered in pure white snow. Snow eventually covered me from head to toe, and I blended in with everything else. This is how I realized that winter has arrived so I took another look around and decided this wasn’t the place to be and headed in to get some nice and toasty hot chocolate.

Bitter, cold and humid--an enchanting combination. Blades of grass shining in the sunlight from the tiny edges of ice illuminated across them. These shafts of frozen water also dangling from the edges of homes, and the white blanket that mother nature has laid out spreads across the landscape. Blue lips and chattering teeth complete the package as the cold creeps across your skin. Winter's breath whisks away the heat, leaving you with a chilly pale face, even though your blood still runs warm underneath.

I stepped outside and felt the bitter cold chill in the air. The snow lightly covered the mailboxes that stood in a perfect row, the cars that lined the sides of the street, and the roof tops for as far as I could see. The icy wind blew and it sent a shiver through my bones. As I prepared to take on the
treacherous hill up ahead I looked up and took a deep breath. I climbed and climbed and it seemed like there is no end in sight, as if the hill has no top. With each step I sank further into the snow making me feel like I was getting no where. I kept on moving going up and up, and up until I finally reached the top of the hill. While at the top I took my sled and walked backwards. I started to run using the rest of my energy, trying to get as much speed as possible. My finger tips clamped on to the handles of the sled, and I held on for deer life. As I passed people on both sides of me, dodging and swivering as I bombard down the hill I could hear laughter in all directions. As I looked ahead I noticed a huge jump at the end of the trail. With the anticipation of what lay ahead I could feel my body race with adrenaline When I hit the jump I felt free like a bird flying. Unfortunately this feeling didn't last long and neither did my ride. Before I knew it I hit the ground so hard it felt like I was being punched in the gut. Snow rushed at my face like an avalanche. When I reached the bottom of the hill all I I could feel was the stinging cold on my face, and my numbing fingers and toes. The warm adrenaline that had only moments ago rushed over me was gone. I ran inside from the bitter cold and made a cup of steaming hot chocolate with marshmallows, and embraced myself with a fuzzy blanket by the crackeling fire. -Haley Lewenczuk

The white blanket covers for forever stretching as far as the eye can see. With every new snowflake it seems like a hundred float down to say hi to the new year. With cold they remain until spring arrives once more. But as I look out the window I can’t see the white wonderland I use to know. One inch is all that remains after the howling winds whip through the air. The suspense of waiting for a storm that will not come rather gifting Baltimore and Philadelphia instead. As the frigid blistery winds stab icy daggers at my face, the wind fights with me shoving me back. I can hear the wind whistling in my ears making them feel like icicles. Heaps of white flurries frantically started coming from the sky. A white sheet of snow lay over the roads and a sleek sheet of ice lay beneath, covering the roads like a blanket. Trees are naked and piled with fluffy crisp snow. Squirrels are hibernating in there homes all warm, cozy and content. During an ice storm in the winter it's the most crucial thing never to drive on the roads. Danger will welcome itself and danger will never leave your side. -Bridgette

The gray clouds cover the sky like a blanket as graceful snowflakes dance in the wind. The fluffy snow covers the land as far as any eye could see. Hysterical laughs erupt from children wrapped in layers like mummies. The trees remain poised as the snow peacefully lands upon them. In the woods, desperate animals search for their last bit of food. The once beautiful lukewarm creek has become a block of slippery ice. In January you can just have the feeling that it is winter and joyful. The low temperatures force you inside as the summer clothes go into hibernation for the next few months. The fire that is burning illuminates the whole room with a welcoming glow. You look outside and see a blanket of snow covering everything outside and you call up your friends to go outside and grab their sleigh and go sleighing and make jumps so you can soar through the air. And after all of this you come back in and watch a winter movie under the blankets and the warmth of the crackling fire.

The wind blows open the door, the soft snowflakes fly into the warm house. The cold tries to fight with you, but luckily you have a guard to protect you, your own body heat. Looking out you can see your imagination building on top of rooftops. A hard rough breeze flies into my face, as I get blown away. I can barely smell the hot cocoa floating in the air, as marshmallows dance in my head. But as I think of warm things I am also thinking of frigid weather. All the things we did in cold weather like sledding, ice skating, skiing, and snowboarding are the real reasons why winter is the best season.

It has come to that point in the year. Everyone rushes in, closes the doors, and grabs all the blankets that can be found. It’s winter once more. The one thing parents fear of this season is the hasty temperature drop, the bleak winds that come, and the fevers that claw at your health. Although winter isn't all that bad to kids. I for one love riding down the crystallizing snow and taking in a breath of cool winter air, but my mother doesn't. I enjoy going to the car and seeing the late winter frost crawl up the windows and taking over the cars outside perimeter, drinking hot cocoa with little snowman poop(marshmallows my niece says it the other way) and snuggling together on the couch just to get a bit more warm. I understand why parents or adults don't like winter but if you ask me they’re a bit skittish. Then one fateful day I understood why parents can get a bit anxious about winter.

Cold Weather Exploded Moment

As winter dawns, united they come all fall down onto the ivory cotton blanket. I grab my snow gear and get dressed. As I walk outside the snow greets me with pleasure and dignity. Taking two steps out into the winter wonderland I look around and notice high, hefty piles of snow lying across the branches of pine and firs. Looking up at the sky I see tiny miniature snowflakes spiraling down towards earth in a slow gradual matter. As I stick my tongue out I can feel the soppy, aqueous snowflakes falling one by one. It was time for me to go back inside. I take off all my snow gear and sit by the fire, sipping hot chocolate and all snuggled up in a flossy, comfy blanket.

As I walk down the freezeing side walk I feel the snow blowing in my face and I no my face is as red as a tomato.I see my friends Adam and Troy fall head first into the snow so I run over and just get white washed. When Iget up I see adam laughing and troy is still in the snow all you could see was his feet.So we just end up leaveing troy there. As me and adam are walking cooper skateing next thing you know adam chases him down and tackles him and I just ran away. But as I started to run I could feel the frost bite flowing up my leg they got so num I couldnt even feel them/the pain any more my gloves were frozen from falling in the snow and my ears felt like they were about to fall off.I keept telling myself that my house was close so I keep walking on the side walk.As i finally reach my house I had to get down the icey hill so I just slide down but I couldn’t stop so i crashed into a snow banchen but as i get up troy and cooper are there waiting.I ask where is adam and cooper says I pushed him under the ice and he froze there so I make a snow ball and hit him in the face and his face looked frozen and he ran away and sliped on the ice and he just sat there for awhile.now my hand defenitly had frost bite so me and troy walk inside my house and we are totally frozen and troy puts his hand under burning hot water and just falls to the ground and now im still frozen in front of the fire and donovan dumps a bucket of snow on me and i dont even move or look at him i just say there mostly cause I didnt want to get up.Troy is still frozen on the ground and he stayes like that for an hour because his hands hurt somuch.

I walk off the bus and immediately freeze. The cold air bites my unguarded fingers. My teeth bounce, making the nose of an egg cracking. Of course I'm an unloader. I have to grab skis colder than liquid nitrogen. I unload all the skis, poles, and snowboards one by one, as I feel like my hands are going to fall off. The cold air goes right through my shoes and socks and hits my long-nailed toes. I was wishing for a heat wave. I finally get the call "that's." I scream with joy on the inside, but I still can't feel my hands.

As I opened the squeaky, white, icy door, I leap outside in the freezing snow and all of a sudden... My toes are frost bitten and my nose is like a melting piece of ice. Two minutes later, I hear my mom scream, "shut the frigid door Gabriella manning Maia!!" And slams the door. Now there are only snowflakes, and my freezing body.

i tie up my white as a snowman skates and watch as the zamboni moves slowly on the ice creating a sheer and level platform. all the skaters are eager at the front of the line waiting to get on the ice. i am so tempted to just sneakily go on the ice even though the zamboni isn't done yet because it is a rule that you can't go on the ice when the zamboni is on. obviously i don't do it because I i tried my hardest to have self control but if i was with my couch i would have had it and ran on the ice and wouldn't care what anyone said. My couch would have laughed. Finally the gate to success opened and all the children ran on the flawless ice and I stepped on and started gliding and imagined that I was on a rink all by myself and did a spiral and attempted to do a triple axel but apparently this boy didn't pay attention to a girl doing a triple axel straight in his vision and knocked me over and hIt all this pressure on my right hand and he looked at me with this blank face and I was like really and he asked me if I wanted help up and I screamed NO and skated off. After that drama I realized that I had sprained my right hand and oh wait I didn't sprain it this kid knocked me over.

Standing there in temperatures that feel subarctic. Wind feeling like a freezing slap in the face. Short sleeve shirts are now extinct and jackets taking there place. The air itself resonates a cryo like freeze. Color drains from everything and is replaced by a luminating white jacket. Yet we know warm will soon take its place. And that alone gives me determination to power on through these days.

This must be death. The wind blowing feels like a ghost just ran through me. The world is a block of sheer ice, and I live in this frigid, frigid world. Icicles as long as elephant tusks hang from the frozen gutters of the frozen brick houses. Everyone is inside, with their hot chocolate, and cozy fireplaces. The snowflakes are bombs, landing on every uncovered square inch of our bodies. The cold beats down on me and punches my sore, sore limbs. The snow hates me, but hugs me with its icy arms. Finally my home approaches towards my scrunched up, hunched over, shivering body, and then my legs gave out over the ice.

-Genevieve Farr

crunch crunch crunch goes the snow as I slowly make my way to my destination. The cold crisp air sends chilling knives up my back, every breath I take feels like it's freezing my lungs. seeing the smooth ice just waiting there for you to step on it so it can make its evil move. 1 foot after another getting closer and closer to finding the treasure… warmth, you feel yourself suddenly getting off balance, you heart pounds as u make your last ditch effort to save yourself as you plummet to the icy ground. -Hannah Robuccio

I stuffed on my old, tattered Vans that were now more brown then navy blue. My Nationals Swim Competition sweatshirt hugged my body, preparing me for the winter weather of New England. I opened my front door. The wind whispered in my ear, making me step back. I took a deep breath, shuddering. As I took my journey down the porch stairs, the black ice stared straight into my eyes. It was practically war between us: me and the cold. I’ve never been to fond of any temperature below 45 degrees. Southern California will be just fine. So, as I start my descent to the heated car, I sprint carefully, dodging the mean surface of ice patches. The finish line, only a couple yards away, was calling my name. Before I knew it, my legs were pushing my body up onto the warm seat of my moms 16 year-old Land Cruiser. I had to admit that I was a pro at this race by now. Every morning it was the same thing, which gave me quite the advantage. I just hope I can take a break from this marathon soon.

Chair Lifts

The snow guns fire glacial knives that jager and gash every morsel of my face. Swaying above the tiny snow village you see in your dreams. Rock, sway, josle. The death seat maneuvers you around. Hoping for the time of arrival like it will never come. Abruptly, it checks me against it’s own arm forcing me to gag. ‘Why?!’ I ponder. ‘Why do you have to stop it now?!’ I lean my back against the backrest and snag the armrest for control over this beast it stagers then continues with a steady flow of movement. As like it will never appear again I see it the holy drop off of the monster.

Winter on one hand can be a time for joy and sanctity, but winter can also be tragic. Icicles falling from the edge of you roof, slippery roads causing accidents everywhere, ice covering up rivers making it look frozen when indeed there is thin ice below and finally sickness begins to spread everywhere from fevers to flu causing a rush for most people to get flu shots. If only there was a way to stop the winter's dark side.
