Exploded Moments 2016

An exploded moment looks at life through a microscope, so that you can appreciate all of the fine details of an experience.  Think about a moment from your summer that you can explode, brainstorm, and write about in a detailed paragraph.  Use imagery, a simile, a metaphor, and an example of personification in your paragraph.  Once your draft is complete, post your paragraph in the comment section below and sign your name. Be sure to proofread for grammar and spelling.

The frigid sand grips at my feet as they sink into the soft powder. The sun is blinding like a crimson morning star. The towering pine trees around me skirt the perimeters of the lake and then slowly sink into green pinpricks across the untouched, pristine water.Inhaling I can feel the sharp, cool morning air puncture my lungs. Exhaling I can see the thin mist from my breath float, free and joining with the fog that coats the lake in a thin veil of silver. The scene is mostly silent except the occasional cry from a bird as if to state to the world that it's still there. Entering back inside sends a rush of warmth tingling up my spine and my thoughts are put to rest.

As I walk up the spiral staircase I imagine what it would be like. How fast would I go? How long is it? What is the…. Then all of my wonders swirled in my head like a bowl of soft serve ice cream until I heard a voice that said “next.” That was my signal. It was my time to step into a tube. The sun glared down at me in the sky which was then I knew that this was going to be the perfect ride. I heard the sound of laughing water and that's when I got pushed down and all of my worries faded. All I thought about was the chlorinated water brushing up against my back and how many more times I would like to enjoy this. “Boom” it was over, I spit out into a huge blue pool with many people who had experienced what I did. Their faces filled with laughter and enjoyment which I then knew that, that was the best ride ever!

As the biggest wave was approaching, everyone grabbed on to the handle, except for me. My friend, scared, grabs my handle accidentally along with hers and I was flopping around like a fish out of water. It felt as if the waves were reaching up and grasping me to pull me in the water. With my paddle in one hand, I worried it wouldn’t be for long. I held on to my paddle as hard as I could but it was hard because It felt as if the river was spitting in my face while the waves were bouncing us all around. But during this dramatic experience, I had a super fun time. It reminded me of amusement park rides, but not just one, a whole bunch combined.

I adjusted my grip on the handlebars and continued down the winding dirt trail, the cool breeze blew on my face it felt like I had been splashed by cold water. We took a sharp turn to the right and smoothly drifted down the path. The trees waved to us as we drifted by in a quiet speedy fashion. We were not far from our destination as the trail changed. The road was a roller coaster, bumpy and rough jerking us from left to right at an indescribable speed. We finally arrived I grasped the handlebars, re- adjusted my position on my seat, took a pedal or two and I was off. I could hear the screams of friends ahead and behind me. The wind stung my face as I flew down the steep hill. I felt the sudden instinct to grasp the handlebars but I held back, letting my bike go freely down the hill, and before I knew it I was squeezing my brakes coming to a complete stop.

The rapidly moving waves felt as if I was on Rockin’ Roller Coaster! I turned and tossed, and tossed and turned aggressively as the rocky and rapids raced me down the river. Waves hitting me from all angles, and let me tell you, river water does not exactly taste like pink lemonade. As the salty texture in my mouth danced at a party, my paddle stroked against the murky water like a comb sifting through a little girls hair. Then, out of the blue, we came to a sudden halt in the gloomy river. Excited, yet nervous screams, filled the air as we journeyed down a wild rapid. People were popcorn, persistently popping in and out of the adventurous raft that was yet to tip over.

As I walk through the burning hot sand, my ice cream begins to melt in the hot, hot sun. The sand was soft and warm as I lie on it. The water was shining like a diamond in sunlight. I yell for my cousin “Watch out!” as a big wave comes crashing down on her and knocks her down. After she got up we laughed about it and ate our soon to be gone ice cream.

As the hot summer air brushed against my face, tempting me to jump in. I quickly walked over to the diving board and stopped. My heart was racing faster than i have ever anticipated, almost as if my heart was in a race. I admit i was scared to jump, i was afraid that the water would engulf my entire body and that i wouldn’t be able to escape no matter how hard i tried. But i was determined to overcome my fear, and that i would be able to conquer those hurdles of fear. So i gave it my best and i jumped in, at first i was very scared. I started to panic just a bit, that's when I realised that i could overcome this fear all i had to do was swim. I swam up to the surface and took a deep breath relieved that i made it. I jumped that hurdle and made it to the finish line safe and sound!

As I went up, down and upside down, the mountain had no feelings but anger. My outside was like a safe but on the inside I was screaming for help. As I entered the skyscraper I could see what had happened as I got pushed backward upside down, as a ball is rolled. My eyes open but I could see nothing. We pushed out of the skyscraper and farther up till we got to the very tip of the skyscraper. Then down we went. I was locked and would not open till I got to a halt. As I went down, there were flashes of light blinding me after the treacherous journey came to a halt. I got off and my legs were noodles. I could not walk but it was worth every second!

There is a vibrant, bold and spicy aroma hanging in the air, waltzing through my nose, and assaulting my senses. The taste entrances me and shoves me into a state of hot euphoria,The heat dances on my tongue, spices popping and crackling, piercing my taste buds. The Chili Crab taunts me,goading me into consuming more and more, My body is struck with burning fire after every bite I consume, I feel the cheap leather seating sticking to me like glue,The dim lighting revealing the thin layer of stagnant smoke enveloping the restaurant, With only rapid fire Mandarin Chinese to give me company. There is nothing that calls to me more than Chinatown. The night welcomes me with street vendors producing rich scents and aromas, painted lanterns line the street in silent sentry warding off the darkness.Chinatown shifts into its own paradise of night right before my eyes, the crowds welcoming me ,fireworks accenting the deep night sky with complex patterns and gallant colors leaping across the sky ,We gaze in awe, as if God were before us. Welcoming the sight of vibrant flames dancing across the sky.

I walked into my favorite room where anyone could be themselves and not let anyone judge them. As I faced the front of the room I could see a clear image of me through the glassy wall. I felt the adrenalin rush through my body as if I were getting electrocuted. The music played getting louder and louder. I started moving my body, first my head, then the effect carried on throughout my body. I was expressing my emotions and feelings through my own style of movement. It was just me and the music. As I reached my fingertips to the door I had so much energy, I felt like I was Darth Vader using the force. I was allowing myself to find myself and lose myself at the same time. The music was taking over me like a big swarm of bees surrounding a flower. My leg was all the way to my head and next thing you know I could be spinning around for hours like a dreadial. My heartbeat was following the beat of the music one count at a time. Dancing is my happy place.

The cold salty blankets of water rush over my head in a race to enter the shore first. The sand travels into my hair as i tumble in to the shore my boogie board following behind me pulling my ankle into the waves. Seagulls fly over my head into the clouds as if escaping the crashing waves. The sun slowly setting on the horizon while boaters race in. The tide lowers and is a lot calmer, the dogs run in and out of the ocean searching for a tennis ball that i am still holding in my hand. The nights ends with the dogs hiding under the beads while the fireworks are happening, I think to myself good dog tasha, good dog.
~Marion Chase

*The good dog Tasha is reference to a book i had called Good Dog Carl and the dog was a rottie and my aunt had a rottie named Tasha that died many years ago.

The wind whistled past my ears. The temperature had dropped at least 23 degrees within the last 10 minutes. My hand felt like blocks of ice. I remember the feeling of the smooth contin on my sleeping bag as I watched the sun peek under the horizon. The sky looked like something out of a dream. The moon shined bright. I stared out into the glimmering night sky. wondering what could be out there? I fell asleep under the stars.

Waiting. All I could do was sit there and try to convince myself that this event would be a blast. What kept me from my state of calmness and serenity was the wind howling in the tunnel, wild and ripping. The next person on the bench swiftly got up and stood in the entrance of the tunnel, hands above their head and ready to fall into the small tunnel. They let themselves easily fall into the wind's arms, that were outstretched and ready to take yet another person's senses into another realm, that seemed so distant, but yet so close. Each person had a total of one minute in the tunnel at a time, so that others wouldn't have to wait so long. For me, this person's time went as fast as the speed of light. They exited the tunnel and it was my turn to do something I hadn't done since I was about six, which mind you, was not a good experience for such a young person. I arose from my chair like a zombie, mindless and thoughts blurry. I briskly walked to the entrance and let go of my fears. This was instantaneously one of the best feelings I had ever acquired. I felt mere weightlessness, and I knew that I was flying just above the protective mesh, that covered the fans that belched air out at alarming rates. My minute was up before I knew it.

As I walked into the crafts metal hull, I felt a rush of adrenaline, as I realized that I was going on a trip to Tucson, Arizona, to see my Grandpa and Uncle. As I took my seat on the plain, I felt the chair as I leaned back and relxed, waiting for the journey ahead. As the plane drove onto the runway, the hull started rattling, and I was giddy with excitement as the plane finally took of. The plane roared like a lion, as the wind tried to wrap its long arms around the wings of the plane. My mind was running around in my head, thinking about all the cool things I would see and do in Arizona. As the plane finally calmed and stopped shaking the plane glided through the air, like a hang glider.

As I fly down the hill feeling almost as weightless as a feather. I feel the crisp autumn air going into my lungs, and on my face I feel a light mist hitting me. And at that very moment I feel free. I feel like I could just fly, overcome gravity and take off. Then I adjust my feet on the pedals, and my hands on the handlebars and go faster. As I looked to either side of me the trees seemed to be waving at me seeming to push me to go faster. So I did and when I did the mist turned to a soft rain and it sting my face. Then I notice I am near my destination and before I know it the thrill is over and I am at a complete stop.

I inhale the crisp woodland air. I can taste the aroma from a late night fire and the bitter pine trees. I hear the distant screams of joyful children and the waves lapping against the jagged rocks. I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I sprint to the edge of the dock. In one quick move I leap into the air, feeling suspended in motion for just a heartbeat before I plunge into the icy water. The sweetness floods my senses and envelopes my body. I feel at home.

As the hot summer sun hit my face I immediately began to sweat. I walked out with my stick in hand. My face cage was rubbing against my cheeks like sandpaper on wood. The soft pillowy grass was a blanket for my shiny, white ball. I whacked the ball as hard as I could hoping that it would get near the goal. I watched with anticipation as the ball flew into the net. At that moment I knew I loved playing field hockey.

As I started to hit the tree with the razor sharp axe the sound of birds took over the thud of the axe hitting the perfectly seasoned oak. I could see that the first couple strikes weren't doing much damage but over time the notch of the cut away wood took shape. In the surrounding area you could still see the remains of the past attempts to strengthen my cabin walls. As the trees danced around me I made the final cuts I could smell the traces of animals and the sound of dogs barking in the distance. When the tree gave way I cleared the area throwing the axe behind me, I finally finished my goal.

It was a snowy day as I prepared to go down the hill on my sled.I ran and jumped onto my sled.I was going so fast the snow felt like hail pelting on my face, the wind was going 150 miles a hour it felt like.Up ahead there was a line of trees I knew I had to stop but the wind kept my arms and legs down with it’s mighty arms. The trees were getting ever so near so I rolled out of the sled and into the snow.I was now a pile of flesh and meat freezing in the shivering snow.

As I took my first leap off the wood tower my heart started beating faster. I was a bird flying with the wind whipping against my face. I looked around and saw beautiful, healthy, green trees. Their leaves were like the color of a praying mantis. I laid back in my harness and relaxed, before I had to prepare for my landing. When the platform began to come closer I remembered what my instructor told me. “Pull your knees up when you land!” She told us. I yanked my knees up to my chest as far as I could. Once I had hit the landing I knew I’d want to do that again. - Ava Haas

The sun was beating down angrily on my back as my teammate passed me the ball. The air was heavy with the scent of old sweat. The ball was a rocket, moving closer to me faster than I could comprehend. I took a step closers to the ball. My stick was like a feather in my hands, lightweight, like it always should've been there in the first place. And suddenly time stopped moving. I received the pass and took two long strides to the net as I shot. The ball flew through the air in slow motion...right into the back of the net!

The time had come! The waves roaring in the sea on the left of me rippling down to the shore line. On the right of me the people I had not known, just the average people who liked to go to the beach. Under me the soft squishy sand to break my fall over and over. Finally, the thing that made this all possible, the beautiful eye catching day the sky had given me. I waited for the most precise moment to go… “GO”, I said. I started sprinting down the shoreline as the sand was beginning to feel like wet cement as each step I took I went deeper into to the never ending ground. I went to use all the energy my body could give to that board. Woosh, the board went speeding down the crusty shore line. There I was gaining up to the board just like a Nascar race. I went to jump, and in mid-air the whole world stopped as I realised I was going to do it. I landed on the the board went up a wave and then spun the board to do a 180 and stuck the landing. “ wow, I said. I can’t believe I stuck the landing.”

My thoughts scattered, for my mind was focused on the way the sand drags me into the ocean. I was inhaling the sweet sensation of the porch on a beach house and exhaling my memories while I lived in the moment. The waves were blankets on a summer night. No one wanted them. Sitting there I tried not to think too hard about the salty taste in my mouth that was impossible to forget. Ignoring my surroundings, I stepped into a whole new world. The water stroked the palm of my hand like a cat trying to get attention. My thoughts were interrupted when the sight of my parents disappeared. Worried, I made my way through the crowd and found my way back to the only reason I wanted to come. Salt water taffy.

It felt like my stomach was going to explode, as my nervous feelings kicked in. I was boarding the beast that people call….”The Tower of Terror”. My trembling feet slowly edged their way on to the platform. The room was dark. They had LED lights on the corners of the walkway, so everyone knew where they were going. The roof was quite high, and had a milky brown look. The operator of the ride led my sister and me to the front row. I gestured my hand towards anyone who would be willing to go in before me, because no one, (including me), wanted to be in the front row on a ride, but my sister shoved my back into the dark, leather seats. I reached under the chair, and slowly wrapped the rather skinny belt around my waist. The strap felt like a cobra, tightening me from all sides.
The ride started soon enough, moving the platform through the so called origin story of the ride, showing us why it was given the name, “Tower of Terror.” My hands were shaking, as I tightened my grip onto the cold, dead handlebars. Then darkness….
WHOOSH!!!!!!!!!
The machine jolted us toward the top of the tower. We were approaching the open windows, as the crimson moonlight shined through, making everyone around me visible. Suddenly, we all flew upwards, just barely hanging on to the handlebars. Up, then down, then up again. It felt like we did that consistently at least a thousand times. I could hear loud shrieks around me, including my sister (she has the wimpiest scream). Soon later, the contraption slowly came to a stop. My head was spinning, making me dizzy (even though we never spun around). My sister and I eventually made our way off the ride.
‘Whoa,’ I thought. ‘That was….awesome! I’m going again!’

I was on the bow, the ship rising and falling beneath me. The ship plunged into the trough, spraying water everywhere, the water was warm and the sun was shining. The ship was gleaming and we could see the harbor. All the the sails looked like a forest of white trees. The islands were lush and green. The boat rode the waves like a sea bird, riding over them as if in flight. The waves would try to tip us but the boat just went straight over them. It was a beautiful day for sailing.

The fog rolls over the lake in the early morning hours of summer. I am siting in my kayak, silently waiting and listening to the soft splashes of the loons in the distance. Suddenly I feel my line jolt at the impressive speed of a 747 jet engine. My heart starts racing as I see my pole bend as if it were a piece of spaghetti. I set the hook as if I was pulling a tree out of the ground and begin to reel in the line as though I was a drill on high power. I lose all recognition of everything around me and concentrate on one thing only, catching that fish. The fish comes close enough for me to see the silvery color of its beautiful, shimmering body. The fish fights against me pulling my body back and forth in constant motion like a rocking chair. Finally, I am able to grab the fish and pull it into the kayak. Excitement rushes through my body. I have caught the biggest fish of my life!

As we were approaching the front of the line, I could hear the distant screams and the engine thrusting forward at rapid speed. I climb on to the cart. The announcer was talking but fear spoke louder. The seat belts fall down and then it hits me, there’s no turning back! I grab onto my friends hands for dear life, as the ride moves forward. Nervousness takes over my body. So many Thoughts are running through my head as if they were running in a marathon. The distant scent of oil and popcorn surround me. I feel dizzy, and then up we go. The screech of the monster below me is pounding in my ears. I fight all urge to shut my eyes. The cart climbs the tower that seems like a 100,000ft tall like Godzilla. Then were at the top, the whole world seems to slow down and I look around. I could see the whole world. Everyone seems so tiny and powerless. I want to take in this moment but before I could… The cart races forward! As it falls straight down, and I felt all the nervousness being conquered by the excitement that was much more powerful. A smile is printed on my mouth. As the ride came to a halt, I was stunned that I had just done something I never thought I could do. All around me I hear laughter and my fear is a distant memory.

“L-u-n-e-n-b-u-r-g”

I lifted my hand from the cluster of everyone else's and trailed my way to mid-field. *Boom* *Boom* *Boom*
I could hear the song my heart was singing in my chest. I felt my heart start to race quicker and quicker almost as if it was Elaine Thompson crossing the finish line. My head blazed with millions of questions. I focused on the referee, waiting for him to blow the whistle and start the game. The ref rose the glimmering whistle to his mouth but then hesitated. “Oh my god come on,” I yelled impatiently in my head. After what felt like a whole lifetime, the man in black and white blew the rationing little whistle and hustled out of the way. The athlete with the ball on the other team slid the ball to the player next to her. The two teams ran in and away from each other like a stampede of wild beast.

The rise of the soot finally came to a smolder as it was time for the magnificent fireworks. The first one went off to flight and an immense pop slapped up against my ear. The aroma in the air of the fresh cooked lobster and steamed clams fueled my appetite . As I look up, the star filled sky disguised itself into the pyrotechnics. Light up necklaces in various colors illuminated against the patio made of stone bricks. The lake was like a mirror for the display . I was amazed by the astonishing coloration and the uproar within the working art. The fireworks were a thunderstorm in the blackened clouds. The show was now to come to a conclusion. The last streak soared up and exploded outwards and the tumult shook my eardrums. Many claps made a continuous sound ,and the show came to a halt. Phillip Arpano

I come down the final stretch I can hear the massive roaring of people shouting like “kick it in” or “go go go”! When I come up to the final turn I can see the finish line just a few yards away. I started to turn on my jets. I saw the second place kid was dying down and I knew that I could go for the kill. As I passed him, I saw a growing shadow that was coming so close and fast, he passed me and I felt a breeze so strong that I totally lost concentration. He had monstrous spikes on his feet digging into the the ground so hard I can feel the grass hitting my legs like hail. When I crossed the memorable finish line I was so relieved that the brutal race was over. I felt two medals go around my sweaty, wet neck, and I made my way over to the people that were supporting me all the way. Everybody was crowding around me so much that I was so dizzy, I felt like I was in a different world. The only thing I can notice was when I looked up at my coach and saw the biggest smile in the world!

I held myself tall and proud as I ran into the terror. I couldn’t control the frightening and tingles rushing through my body. As I looked further into the mysterious path of waiting people, all I could see was complete and utter nothingness. The suspense was building inside me like a jack in the box, wound up, and ready to pop. As the doors slam shut, I could feel the jolt of all twelve floors. Darkness took over, now in charge of everyone who would dare to enter. The sudden movements jerked my body back and forth as I grabbed the handlebar like it would keep me safe. A blast of cool air filled my nostrils as the ride shot up. Before I could catch my breath, the tower came to a sudden drop and my body flew out of my seat. That same process horrified me again and again. As the animal finally released us from its grasp we all knew what real terror was.

The drive was as long as the universe, stretching from the U.S.A to the Canadian border. All I could think was, “what will it look like? How big is it?” My mind couldn’t stop hugging the thought of the great falls, Niagara Falls. The night before, my brain wouldn’t shut off, it just kept running around and thinking about it. As we got closer and closer, I could smell the salty, yet fresh water. Closer and closer the beast’s roar got louder and louder. It couldn’t be far now. The car ran like the wind, urging to get to Niagara. Before me, light, puffs of cottony mist arose from under the ground, swallowing buildings. The excitement raced through me like a race car. Then, we were there. The beast was right in front of me. I stared, as it hypnotized me through the crashing roar of the water. The battle of the water between water was mesmerizing. I had never seen anything like this. Getting closer, near the cold gate that locked me out of where the water was, I could taste the quick bursts of salt drifting up into my open mouth. All my questions were answered, I had no thoughts. I was speechless. My mind quited, slowly resting for the first time in hours. The puzzle was complete.

I stood there. Anxious. I could hear the song my heart was singing to in my chest. The demon on my shoulder took over, telling me the bad things. Thoughts were racing around my mind, jumping and springing around the inside of my brain. As I tried to convince myself that I would do fine, I kept telling myself, “ just like practice, just like practice”. My feet were slipping off the chalky panel mat. My rip stilled burned as if a little flame sat at the center of my palm. I could taste the gritty chalk, I could see it falling off my hands like little snowflakes. I looked straight ahead with my hands sharp and by my side only hoping to impress the judges. And then I knew that this would be the most important bar routine of my life.

The cold wet plank digging into my smooth feet. The monster begging to engulf me under it’s tough grasp. Looking down at the dark blue monster. Sloshing and swirling. Trying to get to me. I close my sore turquoise eyes and step of the plank. Flying through the air like a blade cutting through a stick of celery. Then the monster reached out to me and engulfed me in one bite. I slowed my descent and opened my sore eyes. I saw the dark blue monster engulfing me pulling me down, dragging me around like I was a doll, but I got up. Trying to get to the surface. Crying for air. My lungs on fire. Then the monster's grasp was released from me and my head came up. Gasping for air I slowly lingered over to a stone and crawled up. Falling over still gasping for air. “It was worth it.” I croaked. “I proved him wrong.” Then curling up and starting to drift asleep after my tumultuous battle.

I sat down on the edge of the shed roof, painting. I had been running for what felt like hours. As I heard my sisters coming I lay down giggling quietly, waiting to run again. They entered the clearing searching, looking for me. I was the last thing they needed to do before their job was over, I needed to turn pretty. My breath had slowed to the pace of a slug as I waited for them to find me. As suddenly as my breath slowed did I feel something grab my legs and start dragging me of the roof. I flailed, waving my arms like windmills until I came to the edge of the roof and made a grab at the gutter. I was seconds too late though, and before I knew it I was laying on the ground tied with a large ,white, and coarse rope. I struggled against my bonds as my sisters set up camp , great I thought, ‘one night to get out of this blasted place and back to The Smoke.’ But, the night passed so slow that I thought somebody had slowed down the time. Then it happened, the ropes slid of and I darted out of the camp. I was free again.

The day had finally come August 16, I have been waiting for this day the whole summer. We had finally got to the mini golf in Maine and started playing. 5 minutes into it, it the sun flew away and it started POURING rain out. We were debating if we should go on agreeing on it was like we were on judge judy. My brother went to toss me the ball but I wasn't looking and “WACK!” Right on the head it was a baseball hitting my head almost. The ball that hit my head was a bright blue with lines all over it, it left a little bump on my head.

We came across the bridge early morning, fighter jets full bloom like a field of flowers in the spring. Helicopters whirled around us if we were a dead animal on the side of the road. We sat there in awe just watching as it came across the channel. The tugs hugged the ship as like it was a small child with a teddy bear. As we headed along the bridge ready to go under once more the beast made one final roar to the people back at home. We came up and the mighty beast was gone like a rock thrown into the ocean.

Standing up in the shearing cold weather. As cold as Antarctica looking over the mountain it’s a beautiful sight but you have to get down. Strap in and hold on! Going down black diamond is a nightmare waiting to happen! It’s icy cold and veryyyy steep if you slip and fall you will hurt your butt instantly. It’s a long way down but a beautiful sight. I was like a speed racer down the hill speeding down till I had to make a stop but… I fell I kept tumbling down and hurt my butt so bad. I got up and kept going down but slowly this time not as fast.

Crash! Boom! The sound of the crashing waves slamming violently against the steady raft. I was trembling with fear, holding on for dear life. The most frightening whitewater wave of the river was walking closer and closer to us. I blinked and I could feel the frigid water splash into my scared eyes, making my vision blurry like there was a cloud standing before them. The Beast finally came, roaring at us.The wave hit us like a tsunami. I gasped, my breath was taken away. We thought we made it out, it was as smooth as glass...until out of the blue we rounded the corner, and CRASH we hit a rock bounding backwards. We got stuck in a whirlpool, thrashing forwards and then getting spit out backwards. Our fearless guide yelled “ALL AHEAD!” Paddles went in rowing like our lives depended on it. We got out of the swirling whirlpool, heading to the campsite. We finally made it back, dripping wet with yucky river water and sweat. Later I thought about all I had been through, It reminded me of a roller coaster ride.

As I scaled up the insanely steep hill my calf's felt they were on fire, a drip of sweat drooled down my forehead. I stopped to pour frigid water on my hands that blister that were on fire. When I got back on my bike the chain had gotten rusty and was soon screaming.

As the coaster went up my blood pumped faster. We got high enough that I could touch the cotton candy clouds above us. As we were at the climax I looked down a an icy chill was sent down my back. Within a millisecond we were racing down the track in what I thought was my death bed. The coaster made a sharp turn and my seatbelt was loosening.I could feel myself soaring on every bump and turn. Then there was an abrupt stop. The ride was over and I was relieved that I was alive.

I stood at the end of my driveway, silently reading a book while waiting for the bus. I heard a distant, rumbling sound as the bus came over the hill. I took a peek from behind my book to see the bus coming down the hill. Waiting for the bus to pick me up I wondered what we were going to do today in school. As the bus came to a rumbling stop, I heard the engine purring, and the sound of kids talking. As I got onto the bus, the doors closed behind me, as if giving me a hug. I took my seat as the bus took off, and I was on my way to school. While sitting on the bus, I read my book, intrigued as the book wrapped me up in its inky grasp, and I couldn’t put the book down. Finally the bus stopped in front of the school. The schools doors open, beckoning us to come inside.

The wait was long... It was finally my turn. I got into the rubbery seat. My heart raced. I could hear the other people shrieking from down below. I wanted to get off. Then a bell rang and it was too late. I was off and away. The darkness crept on me, I could see nothing as I went through the slippery tunnel. I went flying strait and then suddenly dropped. I gasped and then let out a scream. The water was ice, but then a feeling of thrill came to me as the water splashed upon me and as the wind ran through my wet hair. It got lighter and lighter till I had reached the end. I was upset that it was over. :( I was lightning when I came flying out of the tunnel... I thought to myself "Why was I so scared at first?" That was actually pretty fun! I was being a big baby... After that I realized that life is just a big, crazy, scary waterslide, :)

I inhale the crisp woodland air. I can taste the aroma from a late night fire and the bitter pine trees. I hear the distant screams of joyful children and the waves lapping against the jagged rocks. The trees around me are watching, a polite audience. I can feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I sprint to the edge of the dock. In one quick move I leap into the air, feeling suspended in motion for just a heartbeat before I plunge into the icy water. The coldness shocks me like a sharp pain. The sweetness of the candy-like lake water floods my senses and envelopes my body. I feel at home.

That night I got invited to play manhunt with kids at the campground. I became a scaredy cat as we emerged into the pitch black. I was with my friend Skylar, and we walked down. My mind flooded with thoughts what was going to happen. There was this kid who I think is super cute and i’m playing with him. I was a black cat ready to hunt the mice down. Of course he chose me to be on his team. We guarded our home. I sat down like a ball of fuzz. He started to talk to me and I didn’t know what to say. I had to go back so we said goodbye. The next day I saw him and we said hi and never talked that day. In the morning I saw him and that was the last time I saw him. He was my best friend.Every time I play manhunt I think of that amazing, unstoppable, crazy night.

I could smell the smoke and I ran into the backyard where I saw the lights jump and leap into the jet black sky. I sucked in the cool air as I watched them disappear and come back again like a broken record player. I closed my eyes and heard the pops and bangs as the bright lights clashed with the inky black sky. The bright lights dancing in the sky as they fade in and out. Then they were gone, just as if they were never there. On the inside I was still comprehending what I had just seen and on the outside I was sad it was over.

As we placed the raft into the river, it pulled on us like the way the moon pulls at the tides of the earth. The rapids roared at me as we weaved through the river. The water was ice as it hit my face. So that we didn't go hurling into the unknown, we had to tuck our feet tightly under the side of the raft. Trying to sit on the cold, wet, rubbery raft was like trying to hold a slippery frog. When we reached the calm we glanced up at the trees and noticed a beautiful bald eagle that was perched on a tree top as tall as a skyscraper.

The sky was dark and the field was as wet as the sweat on the back of my neck. I hear “READY” I get ready for the enemy. “DOWN” i see my target get down in his stance like a horse getting ready to race. “SET” i notice my hand starts to shake because its getting cold as Alaska! “GO” yells the quarterback I attack him, but as I was going forward I hear “PASS” and drop back in coverage I see the quarterbacks arm cock back like a gun! I go towards where hes looking leaving my guy to be in no mans land. I see the football fly through the air smiling as it flies. I stare it down as it go towards my teammate! He swats the ball down and it lands in my gluey hands and the ball sticks to me! I got an interception!!!! I run and yell “BINGO” I see my teammate Tyler look and see that I have the ball he starts to run and block someone for me! “BOOM” I hear the pads collide I keep on running as I make it 10 yards from where I caught it. I see 3 opponents in front of me and there was no where to go! So I decided if I was going down i would take one of them with me. So I target the smallest kid in front of me and charge him. When im 5 yards away I lower my shoulder and try to truck him like a bulldozer! We hit and his teammates tackle me from behind but I landed on the kid and i heard an “OOF”!

I step up to the plate trying to win the game for my team. Its the bottom of the 6th inning with the tying run on first base, I step up to the plate with two outs. My hands are shaking, I think I have frog in my throat. I think to myself "I can't blow this for my team". Thankfully I get a break, the runner on first steals second base and he is safe! Now its time to be serious, I'm keeping my on that pitcher a hawk looking for a mouse while it is in the sky. Finally the pitcher starts his windup I load up as he lifts his leg, it feels as if I'm swinging this bat at a hundred miles per hour BOOM, the jumps of my bat as if it were alive. The runner on second base starts running to third then to home, I start running, I watch the ball clear the fence, its a homerun. Ball game, Red sox,6 Tigers,4.

An exploding moment I once had was this past summer when me and my dad and my two brothers went cliff climbing along our beach on vacation in Maine. It really was an adventure because we were gone from like 11 am until 5 o clock that night it really was fun we went on and on to the first beach . we walked on the little private beach for a while then headed to the second beach then to the third and fourth on our was through climbing all the steep cliffs our feet killed!because we were walking on sharp jagged rocks bare foot!and occasonaly we would have to climb rocks that we felt like we were going to fall because our finger tips we the only thing that was keeping us from falling into the crashing ocean with sharp rocks sticking our stoumaches were pressed against the rocks holding on for dear life!it was so scary but very fun and we finally arrived at the final and last beach the fifth beach we collected some shells the headed home but me ans Matthew found this mysteryuos trail so we walked on it for an bit and it led us to an old obandoned house on the other side of the island it had no windows ans the roof looked like it was about to fall so we took some pics of it to have as a memory and we left our feet killed so badly but we made it back to our beach and it felt so good to walk on some soft sand after comingg down from those rocks it was quite the day but so fun ns quite the adventure.! by MaryElizabeth Thurston.

Standing wide eyed in the front row of Gillette Stadium, watching him practice throwing the ball like he can do. My ears suddenly sound full with muffled yells and chants of “Dreeeeew”. I feel my hands grip more tightly around the shirt that has his name on it. As he runs over in my direction, my heartbeat is so fast that it feels like it has stopped. He takes the pen from my hand and signs his name across the number 9. He walks away as I let out a scream of complete happiness “YES!” The man behind me says “Did you just get Drew Brees to sign your shirt?” As I shake my unbelieving head yes, he says “way to go kid.” My biggest dream has come true.

It was like I was descending to my doom, at staggering heights. Going down at the speed of light. Then we went down lifting up but not going out. Then we were a slithering snake going side to side. It was a tornado spiraling down. Then we went up it was an insane flight. The monstrosity finally ended. We were not harmed but had lots of fun then we went onto the next expedition.

It was a stormy winter night while my sister and I were spinning around in circles as if we were doing a three sixty turn. As we were letting the cold winter wind come threw the white winter windows, my sister and I were singing like birds and spinning as fast as a cheetah. Later that day our mother was walking up the stairs very quietly, as if she was trying to scare us. Once she saw us she screamed as loud as a lion chasing after its prey, “SYDNEY TAYLOR STOP SPINNING RIGHT NOW AND LET GO” our mom said, my sister didn’t think twice of what she was doing so she decided to let go before stopping. [BASH] as I hit my head on the coffee table! My dad quickly rushed me to the hospital right away, my head was gushing out blood by the second.

My symphony came to a hult, a pounding in my head won’t stop, the whispers of guilt echo in my ears. A jabbing pain runs through my lungs, my breath is lodged in my throat. All around me is black and white...my hands tremble with fear and anger. My tears finally fall, the small oceans glide down my features and create a never ending river of sadness. The air around me feels cold and taste bitter. I open my mouth too let out a scream loud enough for even the gods to hear. But all that comes out is a small whisper full of lies, ‘’I’m okay.’’

It was a dark and scary night. I wasn't alone my friend was there. I was walking home from his house. It was really late around 1:00 am. We could hear loud noises that sounded like gunshots. The sound was getting closer we ran and hid we didn't know what was going on we stayed hidden for a while. We called his dad to come pick us up. We waited about an hour at a nearby park and then tried to contact his dad again but his dad had fallen asleep. We had walk for another hour before we would get to my house. So we started walking. We were almost home when we heard a loud explosion. There was a car fire and the battery had exploded. A lot of people were there we asked if they had called the fire department and they told us they had. We finally reached my house around 3:30 am and we were locked out. Then i remembered that my window was unlocked and we climbed in. When i woke up it was all a dream my friend wasn't there and i had been home all night.

We were next, we waited an hour to go on the cyclone. So anxious for my first roller coaster ride. The cart pulls up, laughing people jump off screaming "that was awesome!" Me and my sister drop into the cart like dead bodies. The safety bar comes down and sticks to us like glue. It starts and we head to the top. We sit at the top then fall. After the drop, It was so fun!
